History
25 years of
computational
imaging research

The Computational Imaging Symposium traces its roots to the Computational Imaging (COIMG) track at IS&T Electronic Imaging, which started in 2003. Over nearly 25 years the track grew into one of the most active venues for research at the intersection of optics, signal processing, machine learning, and imaging systems.

In 2027, COIMG becomes an independent symposium — the Computational Imaging Symposium (CIS) — with its own program, organizing structure, and identity. The move reflects both the growth of the field and a desire to create a more focused, community-owned venue.

Mission

CIS exists to bring together researchers working across the full pipeline of computational imaging: from physics and optics through algorithm design, learning-based methods, and application domains. We value work that bridges theory and practice, and we welcome both mature results and early-stage ideas.

The symposium is organized primarily around talks rather than papers, using a format similar to SIAM conferences. Invited sessions — themed groups of talks organized by community members — sit alongside open abstract submissions, creating a program shaped by the community itself.

Format

CIS is held annually in the Bay Area. The schedule includes morning and afternoon sessions, audience-interactive panel discussions, and social events, plus time for discussion and informal exchange. A poster session gives additional work an opportunity for in-depth conversation.
